Visual Medium

The next step to really get out my voice about social media is through a visual medium. Though I can use post my video anywhere online and on social media. However, without promotion to let people know about it, my rhetoric project would be like dropping a stone in the ocean and rarely would it make any response. The visual medium I want to choose is to becomes a speaker and talks about usage of social media across middle and highschool in America. I hope to stand infront of adolensecents, teens, and children because I want to talk to them personally and directly about the issue of it. I would hope that my program would be part of the Student development class 101 of the school. There would be a huge lectural hall of at least 200 people. I would have power point to give a presentation. I would talk about my personal experience of social media and my goal of making social media enviornment least harmful for teens and adolescents. However, this would be very impractical with my skills. First, I am not good at public speaking, I get nervous on presentations. Second, I don't have the money to travel around the country to give presentation. Third, it will be hard to make contact with schools to advocate and make plans for my involvement. However I do think this is still the most effective way to influence my audience. My audience are children, teens, and adolescents. There is no better way to get in touch with them through schools. And proper education should be a guide line to help them. I am also thinking of using social media themselves to promote about media literacy. Using hashtag and everyday post of simple task that help young people to use social media positively. I would also include my social media account for advocacy in my presentation.

If I had to dedicate my efforts of this rhetoric project to a static image to help convince more people to join my side, there are a number of different methods. I could distribute posters advertising for upcoming professional soccer games in the area such as St. Louis FC here, or MLS teams in other markets such as Orlando FC or Real Salt Lake. That would be helpful; unfortunately most advertising of that sort happens on TV. Also, I could put banner ads for soccer summer camps or (academy teams for kids looking to take the next step in their training) on the side of popular websites. This is by far the easiest method to reach the most specific audience for my goal. The main problem with that approach is the cost of buying numerous targeted ads is far too expensive for a student like me with very limited income. I would need a sponsor for my damn ads and that is a workload that I'm unwilling to endure for a project I have honestly lost my passion toward. I think my best solution, still outside of resource boundaries, would be a billboard campaign for a soccer league to expand to St. Louis. As a nation, the country is slowly gaining interest in soccer, but St. Louis doesn't have a team in any of the major national leagues. I hope the large nature of the billboard convinces people that this is a major issue, and St. Louis should be on the forefront of the national soccer movement.

There could be a variety of visual mediums that could be used to project the aims of my rhetoric project: implementation of bioengineered foods. While I believe that there are many mediums that could have the same effect, I feel that the most powerful one could be a long documentary. This field is so broad in the sense that there are so many ways to bioengineer foods that the only way for people o firmly grasp it is to watch an extended movie/documentary on how exactly its done, what it can do, and the benefits from what it can do. Understanding the ins and outs of genetic engineering is essential for one to be completely on board with it. It is such a complex topic and I think if someone is advocating for it they need to explain all the ins and outs that are related to the field. With the documentary I would advertise it heavily with an amazing trailer. Think about it: a good trailer is what really makes people watch certain movies and incorporating this with the documentary would get people to watch it. Also, I would try to get the documentary on Netflix because there are a lot of famous documentaries on Netflix that are well known. This is because of the hardcore documentary-watchers that watch all the different documentaries on Netflix, and thus brings these movies to fame. Also, bringing it to Netflix would expose it to a wide variety of people and this is essential for promoting a specific idea. However, a documentary on genetically engineered foods would be completely out of the question for me because of the amount of money and resources that would be needed. To make a good documentary it would require a lot of professional work, and this is something that is completely unrealistic for this time.

While thinking about what visual mediums are out of my reach, the billboard example from class seems to be an example that is far from possible for me. One of the main reasons why is because it is too expensive for me and I am broke, while having a billboard for 3-4 weeks can cost between $3000 and $23,000 depending on where you live. For the cost of how to create and display a billboard, there are also many reasons why billboards are not the most effective form of advertisement and spending my money on it would not be the most worthwhile. Some of the main problems come with the fact that most billboards are next to roads and highways. Because of this, billboards usually have 3 seconds to get the message across, and a lot of times the message can't be read because the driver is looking at the road and not at billboards. Also, because people drive past it, people often forget about it by the time they reach their destination and cannot look up more information about it while they are in the car. On the other hand, I feel like using a billboard would be effective to enhance my rhetoric project. I have a topic where simply showing images of simple comparisons of what school lunches are like in America and how they should be like in France helps to get the message across in little detail, and if I put a website or video link at the bottom to find out more information it would be very helpful. The images would help draw people in because there is such a large difference  between the two. Some sort of slogan I would include would be like "Eat American or Eat Healthy? Find out more at: _____".

A documentary film would be a good visual medium as my next step in this rhetoric project, because as I said in my MWA4 paper, I would have liked to make my video project a lot longer. Documentaries are informative and factual reports, so I would decide to make a documentary in order to encourage a change in the dog adoption system. The format of my documentary would have a very similar format to the video multimodal project that I turned for this class. I would start off with clips of dogs and show the happiness that they bring. Then I would explain the current options for adopting a dog into your family. Common examples are buying from a breeder, rescuing from a shelter, or buying from a pet store. The next part of my documentary would be all about puppy mills and why they need to be shut down. My film would explain the pros and cons of each of the methods, and explain how (and if) they’re related to puppy mills. Then I would want to explain that for the greater good of dogs, the best option for adoption is rescue. In order to put an end to puppy mills and dog cruelty, we have to start by encouraging rescue and diminishing the support for breeders and pet stores. Each of these factors to this documentary are extremely important in order to make the right point, and each argument would need quite a bit of time. I think making a documentary would be an impractical visual medium for me. This medium is not practical for my skill, resources, or ability for a few reasons. First, creating a movie is a huge production, and I would need a lot of money to do so. I have only ever used iMovie, so producing and editing a movie is out of my ability with regards to skill, on top of not having enough funding to hire someone to help. I also just don’t have time for a project like that.

Visual Medium

Visual mediums are crucial for spreading messages to people in today's busy world. One cannot share their argument or advertise their viewpoint idly because no one will give it any time of day. As a result, the visual mediums one needs to use have to be attractive to the eye and hold the attention of whoever happens to notice. This is what I need for my Rhetoric Project on the United States' treatment of ADHD, but many of the most popular and successful visual mediums are far too impractical to actually be considered. Even an outdated and less effective method like the billboard is far out of my reach. That would not even serve my purpose effectively because ADHD is considered a resolved issue by many, so it would likely be ignored. However, if I were to have any visual medium I would prefer to share my message, I would choose a TV commercial. In the commercial, I would take the main points of my argument and highlight them briefly, address why this issue is relevant, and explain what people who are present may do to make a difference. This would work most effectively because it would allow me more time to fully explain my argument and why people should care. It would also reach many more people so that would increase the range and chance of motivating others to look into the information. However, this is extremely impractical for several reasons. The cost to get airtime is very pricey, and the equipment and staff needed to produce a true quality commercial would also require money and other resources I simply do not have. It would also be unlikely for me to receive the opportunity to begin with because of my age and lack of authority.

Visual Medium

I think one visual medium that would be impractical for my skill would be to create a documentary of what is it like to work behind the scene for YouTube and the businesses they work with. My project tried to convince people that there should be an algorithm created for cleaner content on social media platforms so that people of all ages can view the content. The documentary would be of an actor going undercover and working for YouTube just to see what really goes on behind the scenes. By making the documentary, it would shed light on what the business really tries to prioritize -do they really care for the content creators and their viewers or is do they just try to find more ways to gain more money? I think by creating this documentary, consumers who buy the businesses' products would be more aware of what is going on and where their money is really going. People who are more wary of inappropriate content would know if they are putting their money in the right places. This visual medium is impractical for my skill because I am not a videographer. I do not have the equipment necessary to film an undercover documentary. I also do not have actors at my disposal. On top of it all, I have no funds for any of this. To buy the equipment, it would be thousands of dollars, and to hire an actor would be hundreds of thousands of dollars. I am not capable of any of that. To have an impactful documentary that really moves the audience, how it is made and edited is essential to the process, and that is a skill I do not possess. I would have to hire videographers, editors, actors, and rent equipment. All of this is extremely expensive and not in my power to do.
