Visual Medium

The next step to really get out my voice about social media is through a visual medium. Though I can use post my video anywhere online and on social media. However, without promotion to let people know about it, my rhetoric project would be like dropping a stone in the ocean and rarely would it make any response. The visual medium I want to choose is to becomes a speaker and talks about usage of social media across middle and highschool in America. I hope to stand infront of adolensecents, teens, and children because I want to talk to them personally and directly about the issue of it. I would hope that my program would be part of the Student development class 101 of the school. There would be a huge lectural hall of at least 200 people. I would have power point to give a presentation. I would talk about my personal experience of social media and my goal of making social media enviornment least harmful for teens and adolescents. However, this would be very impractical with my skills. First, I am not good at public speaking, I get nervous on presentations. Second, I don't have the money to travel around the country to give presentation. Third, it will be hard to make contact with schools to advocate and make plans for my involvement. However I do think this is still the most effective way to influence my audience. My audience are children, teens, and adolescents. There is no better way to get in touch with them through schools. And proper education should be a guide line to help them. I am also thinking of using social media themselves to promote about media literacy. Using hashtag and everyday post of simple task that help young people to use social media positively. I would also include my social media account for advocacy in my presentation.

Visual Medium

If I had to dedicate my efforts of this rhetoric project to a static image to help convince more people to join my side, there are a number of different methods. I could distribute posters advertising for upcoming professional soccer games in the area such as St. Louis FC here, or MLS teams in other markets such as Orlando FC or Real Salt Lake. That would be helpful; unfortunately most advertising of that sort happens on TV. Also, I could put banner ads for soccer summer camps or (academy teams for kids looking to take the next step in their training) on the side of popular websites. This is by far the easiest method to reach the most specific audience for my goal. The main problem with that approach is the cost of buying numerous targeted ads is far too expensive for a student like me with very limited income. I would need a sponsor for my damn ads and that is a workload that I'm unwilling to endure for a project I have honestly lost my passion toward. I think my best solution, still outside of resource boundaries, would be a billboard campaign for a soccer league to expand to St. Louis. As a nation, the country is slowly gaining interest in soccer, but St. Louis doesn't have a team in any of the major national leagues. I hope the large nature of the billboard convinces people that this is a major issue, and St. Louis should be on the forefront of the national soccer movement.

There could be a variety of visual mediums that could be used to project the aims of my rhetoric project: implementation of bioengineered foods. While I believe that there are many mediums that could have the same effect, I feel that the most powerful one could be a long documentary. This field is so broad in the sense that there are so many ways to bioengineer foods that the only way for people o firmly grasp it is to watch an extended movie/documentary on how exactly its done, what it can do, and the benefits from what it can do. Understanding the ins and outs of genetic engineering is essential for one to be completely on board with it. It is such a complex topic and I think if someone is advocating for it they need to explain all the ins and outs that are related to the field. With the documentary I would advertise it heavily with an amazing trailer. Think about it: a good trailer is what really makes people watch certain movies and incorporating this with the documentary would get people to watch it. Also, I would try to get the documentary on Netflix because there are a lot of famous documentaries on Netflix that are well known. This is because of the hardcore documentary-watchers that watch all the different documentaries on Netflix, and thus brings these movies to fame. Also, bringing it to Netflix would expose it to a wide variety of people and this is essential for promoting a specific idea. However, a documentary on genetically engineered foods would be completely out of the question for me because of the amount of money and resources that would be needed. To make a good documentary it would require a lot of professional work, and this is something that is completely unrealistic for this time.

visual medium

While thinking about what visual mediums are out of my reach, the billboard example from class seems to be an example that is far from possible for me. One of the main reasons why is because it is too expensive for me and I am broke, while having a billboard for 3-4 weeks can cost between $3000 and $23,000 depending on where you live. For the cost of how to create and display a billboard, there are also many reasons why billboards are not the most effective form of advertisement and spending my money on it would not be the most worthwhile. Some of the main problems come with the fact that most billboards are next to roads and highways. Because of this, billboards usually have 3 seconds to get the message across, and a lot of times the message can't be read because the driver is looking at the road and not at billboards. Also, because people drive past it, people often forget about it by the time they reach their destination and cannot look up more information about it while they are in the car. On the other hand, I feel like using a billboard would be effective to enhance my rhetoric project. I have a topic where simply showing images of simple comparisons of what school lunches are like in America and how they should be like in France helps to get the message across in little detail, and if I put a website or video link at the bottom to find out more information it would be very helpful. The images would help draw people in because there is such a large difference  between the two. Some sort of slogan I would include would be like "Eat American or Eat Healthy? Find out more at: _____".

A documentary film would be a good visual medium as my next step in this rhetoric project, because as I said in my MWA4 paper, I would have liked to make my video project a lot longer. Documentaries are informative and factual reports, so I would decide to make a documentary in order to encourage a change in the dog adoption system. The format of my documentary would have a very similar format to the video multimodal project that I turned for this class. I would start off with clips of dogs and show the happiness that they bring. Then I would explain the current options for adopting a dog into your family. Common examples are buying from a breeder, rescuing from a shelter, or buying from a pet store. The next part of my documentary would be all about puppy mills and why they need to be shut down. My film would explain the pros and cons of each of the methods, and explain how (and if) they’re related to puppy mills. Then I would want to explain that for the greater good of dogs, the best option for adoption is rescue. In order to put an end to puppy mills and dog cruelty, we have to start by encouraging rescue and diminishing the support for breeders and pet stores. Each of these factors to this documentary are extremely important in order to make the right point, and each argument would need quite a bit of time. I think making a documentary would be an impractical visual medium for me. This medium is not practical for my skill, resources, or ability for a few reasons. First, creating a movie is a huge production, and I would need a lot of money to do so. I have only ever used iMovie, so producing and editing a movie is out of my ability with regards to skill, on top of not having enough funding to hire someone to help. I also just don’t have time for a project like that.

Visual Medium

Visual mediums are crucial for spreading messages to people in today's busy world. One cannot share their argument or advertise their viewpoint idly because no one will give it any time of day. As a result, the visual mediums one needs to use have to be attractive to the eye and hold the attention of whoever happens to notice. This is what I need for my Rhetoric Project on the United States' treatment of ADHD, but many of the most popular and successful visual mediums are far too impractical to actually be considered. Even an outdated and less effective method like the billboard is far out of my reach. That would not even serve my purpose effectively because ADHD is considered a resolved issue by many, so it would likely be ignored. However, if I were to have any visual medium I would prefer to share my message, I would choose a TV commercial. In the commercial, I would take the main points of my argument and highlight them briefly, address why this issue is relevant, and explain what people who are present may do to make a difference. This would work most effectively because it would allow me more time to fully explain my argument and why people should care. It would also reach many more people so that would increase the range and chance of motivating others to look into the information. However, this is extremely impractical for several reasons. The cost to get airtime is very pricey, and the equipment and staff needed to produce a true quality commercial would also require money and other resources I simply do not have. It would also be unlikely for me to receive the opportunity to begin with because of my age and lack of authority.

Visual Medium

I think one visual medium that would be impractical for my skill would be to create a documentary of what is it like to work behind the scene for YouTube and the businesses they work with. My project tried to convince people that there should be an algorithm created for cleaner content on social media platforms so that people of all ages can view the content. The documentary would be of an actor going undercover and working for YouTube just to see what really goes on behind the scenes. By making the documentary, it would shed light on what the business really tries to prioritize -do they really care for the content creators and their viewers or is do they just try to find more ways to gain more money? I think by creating this documentary, consumers who buy the businesses' products would be more aware of what is going on and where their money is really going. People who are more wary of inappropriate content would know if they are putting their money in the right places. This visual medium is impractical for my skill because I am not a videographer. I do not have the equipment necessary to film an undercover documentary. I also do not have actors at my disposal. On top of it all, I have no funds for any of this. To buy the equipment, it would be thousands of dollars, and to hire an actor would be hundreds of thousands of dollars. I am not capable of any of that. To have an impactful documentary that really moves the audience, how it is made and edited is essential to the process, and that is a skill I do not possess. I would have to hire videographers, editors, actors, and rent equipment. All of this is extremely expensive and not in my power to do.

Visual Medium

After doing my rhetoric project and noticing that most of the time when we reach outside our boundaries, we can sometimes achieve our goals, but most of the time we fall short. I fell short doing my video, but its still important to keep reaching to new heights. When thinking about visual mediums that would be difficult to achieve, a few ideas came to mind. Since smartphone awareness is a technology issue, and there is so much technology out there in the world, there are so many possibilities. One visual medium that would be outside my physical reach would be to publish an article in a major technology magazine such as Wired, Psychology Today, or Popular Mechanics. It would probably take years to even get close to having an article posted in one of these magazines. Being published here would really get my message across to the most amount of people possible which is ideal, however this wouldn't be very realistic. Another idea I was thinking of would be starting a Youtube channel where I go around and interview people from different campuses and maybe even professionals in this area like psychologists and doctors who agree with me, and who would be willing to speak out on this issue. Either way, both of these ideas would require a ton of time and resources and money, none of which I really have right now. In order to make this work, I'd have to start dedicating the majority of my life right now to making this message take off. Something else I was thinking about would be to get bracelets that remind people to stop looking at their phones, and just hand them out on different college campuses, and maybe even get professors behind the movement. Smartphone awareness is something that I believe needs to be talked about more, so any of these things would be awesome for the cause.

Visual Medium

I think that for my visual medium, I would want to utilize a billboard to work towards the goals of my rhetoric project. Often times, dairy companies will advertise using billboards along interstates and highways in order to recommend their products like milk and yogurt and cheese to people, so I think it would be useful and more familiar to viewers to advertise milk alternatives in the same way as their dairy counterparts. I think billboards are also fairly useful in the realm of advertising and rhetoric because they're something relatively briefly seen, but can get a lot of attention if they're somewhat shocking, eye catching, or particularly distinguished from other billboards.

If I were to make a billboard advertising milk alternatives, I would either make it similar to the billboard of a dairy company, or focus it on the negative effects of milk by utilizing my information on the negative effects the dairy industry has on cows or on the environment. Going with the dairy-based ad, I would probably show a brand of products like Silk soy milk or Almond Breeze almond milk since those are the most readily available products in stores with a price comparable to regular dairy milk. I could also use a slogan playing off of the popular "Got Milk?" campaign that was very prevalent in the 2000s--something like "Don't get milk, get milk alternatives" or something along those lines. In going the other direction, I could also try to persuade people to use milk alternatives instead of milk by showing cows in a field, or a person at the doctors office with a phrase like "Think Before You Drink". I know PETA has run similar ads in order to push people towards vegetarianism and veganism, particularly in places like California.

While I think that these billboards could be effective, I also feel like they wouldn't be a practical choice for me to use for several reasons. One would be that billboards can be expensive to rent out and put up, depending on the type of location you're looking for. A billboard in the city can cost exponentially more that a billboard along a country highway for example, because the billboard real estate would not gain as much traffic on a country highway as it would in a populated city. I also don't know a lot of statistics on what forms of advertising would be effective to viewers, especially when it comes to dietary and food advertising. I feel like it's also a bit impractical to advertise for people to make a lifestyle change, which is why if i were to execute a billboard I'd rather advertise for the milk alternatives product.

Visual Medium

After looking back on my opinion that children should be vaccinated, I came up with a visual medium that would be way out of my skill level or ability to have an article about my topic published in Parenting magazine. I would write an article that contains the reasons for vaccinations, the risks that come with it, and all the benefits to the community and the child. I would use it because the magazine is helpful tips or advice to parents, so they could see how important it is and that other parents are getting their children vaccinated. It is also a good choice because it goes directly to the source which is the mothers to children who need to be vaccinated. I came up with this trying to think how I could reach multiple mothers and that they would see this information and actually take it into consideration. They might take advice from a parenting magazine than someone who doesn’t haven’t a child telling them what to do. This is not a reasonable choice for me because I’m not an editor of a magazine and I have no relationship with anyone who works with magazines, so it would be very hard to get a whole article published in a big magazine. A more realistic idea would be to write a blog on a website that gives advice to new parents or just parents who want to see what other parents are doing. Overall, the information has to be going directly to mothers so they can see helpful information not only for their children, but also for the whole community and to help keep the community safe from awful diseases. Hopefully if a lot of mothers take this advice we can eradicate diseases and the community will become a better place especially for those who cannot be vaccinated.

Visual Medium

A visual medium that would be wildly impractical for my skill, resources, and abilities at this time but would help advance the aims for my Rhetoric Project, which was about pushing the ban on penitentiary solitary confinement, would be something along the lines of an interactive medium, perhaps a VR simulation program. It would aim to more effectively emulate the experiences of a solitary confinement victim through a full-VR first-person simulation of a solitary confinement victim experiencing abuse from correctional officers, sensory hallucinations through visual and auditory distortion effects as well as field-of-view warping to emulate vertigo and loss of spatial awareness, and loneliness. I may have to extend the length of someone being in a claustrophobic room for a while, which may make the experience get boring, but that is kind of what I’m aiming for: the aim of the experience isn’t to be entertaining, it’s to prove my point that it must be dehumanizing, boring, and surreal to go through solitary confinement. It would work better than a static video clip or a poster or any other visual medium because giving a person full visual control of the inmate is arguably a more immersive experience and thus one that can more easily speak to the audience. It is a wildly impractical proposition because I haven’t a lick of clue how to code anything of that caliber or how to gather a sufficient amount of programmers to do said task. Not only that, but hiring the programmers, creating or purchasing a program to run the simulation, and purchasing computers to program and run said simulation must cost a fortune. The VR medium is also still extremely young and inaccessible at the moment, so actually spreading around the simulation program or giving access to the layman might be troublesome. Still, it might be the best and most effective way in speaking to the audience emotionally of how terrible solitary confinement is.

Pollett, Visual Medium

One visual medium that I feel would be impractical for my Rhetoric Project would be using a TV commercial.  TV commercials, while very useful for appealing to a mass amount of people are extremely expensive.  For this reason I would deem this visual medium impractical because I simply do not have the resources to make it possible.  Another reason that it would be impractical for my rhetoric project is due to the length of my Rhetoric Project.  My Rhetoric Project is almost three minutes long, and because of this, it would not be a very successful television commercial.  TV commercials are meant to be short and to the point, to capture the viewers’ attention.   To put it simply, my Rhetoric Project is far too long to be placed on the air to have any success.  As well as the fact that,  to have such a long commercial on the air, it would require a lot of money, something that I do not have.

All of these negatives set aside, I believe that a TV commercial could prove useful for my Rhetoric Project.  If I were able to cut down my video to around 30 seconds and still get my point across, I would be able to use this visual medium much more proficiently.  And added benefit would be that it would be much more cost effective to cut my Rhetoric Project down, as opposed to running a 3 minute long advertisement.  Also, with running a television advertisement I get to pick my audience.  Obviously running a Global Warming advertisement that proposes to phase out non-electric vehicles would not be very effective on a channel such as FOX News.  However, with this I can pose my advertisement to an audience that would be more receptive.  For this reason I believe that a television commercial could be useful, but not practical.

Impractical visual medium

I think an impractical visual medium for my project would be giving a presentation in front of the head of the education department. This would be impractical of my skills because I would not know how to create a professional powerpoint tailored to the head of the education department. I think being able to create a powerpoint and present it in front of the education department would be useful to advance my aims of my rhetoric project because I am bringing my solution to end teenage smoking to the highest level of the education system. I think this is impractical because the head of the education department would not have time to meet with me and it would be nearly impossible for me to meet with her. With this medium I would bring my three plan to to life through a powerpoint presentation that I said I would be showing the head of the education department. I would use a powerpoint because it will effectively show my three step plan and all the reasons why my three step plan will work. I also think the powerpoint will be an effective persuasive element in order to get the head of the education department to foresee my three step plan. I will make sure my powerpoint elaborates my three step plan with videos and pictures. Overall I do not think showing the powerpoint to the head of the education department would be practical. The powerpoint would not be practical because it takes time to get an appointment with the head of the education department and I am sure she would not want to take time out of her day just to see a powerpoint on eliminating smoking for teenagers.  I think if I wanted to make my plan practical I would have to start small. For example, maybe my old high school.

Private Information

My information has been online since I was 8 years old and I registered for my first Gmail account. In the following 11 years, my name, address, interests, photos, videos, and thoughts have been all around the internet and have been stored by tech conglomerates the world over. I have lost track of how many websites I have given permission to use my personal information, my friends, my location, and my interests through Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. I was actually appalled at how detailed the location data used by Apple Maps was inside my iPhone. The company tracked not only where I was at but how long I was there and how many times I had been there since. My phone knew exactly how long I had been working at Chaifetz Arena and subsequently when I went home everyday. On the one hand, this data can be crucial in the case of a massive catastrophe that required medical attention in my vicinity, and family and friends would need to pinpoint me to find out where to come help. However, the majority of users are simply living their lives while governments and tech companies analyze our movement to assess how and when to market their products in the perfect location. Companies pass this information around willy-nilly and frankly, this is why hacking is such a pressing threat in our society. One breach in a major company's data brokerage, and millions of files containing names, birthdays, home addresses, and credit card numbers spill into the void, ready for anyone to use that data.
I am not surprised that my data is freely owned by Apple and I have "signed my life away. " I was surprised that Google had relatively little data in their files. They did have my search history which is no all-time shock, but they didn't have my YouTube search history or my watch history. Also in regards to location, Google Maps had nothing on my location during the same time that Apple had been collecting. While that is heartening to some degree, it is just a shift of the burden of proof from one company to the other. There is no guarantee Apple uses my data any more responsibly than Google especially when coming to advertisement. My laptop has suggested ads based on my search history very often. I hope that the standards of online data sharing become much stricter and encrypted in the future, or else we bear the probability of data being used in much more sinister methods than simply targeted ads.

Visual medium

The visual medium that I am considering for getting my Rhetoric project into the hands of my audience is to create a brochure on Microsoft word. This brochure can be handed directly to the intended audience, or mailed in so that in some way, shape, or form; they will see it and it will be in their hands. That is not the only job of the brochure because in order for it to actually have some kind of effect, it must stand out to the person receiving it. That is why I will need to make it have colors as well as text that stands out and catches the attention of the reader. This idea is very practical because with a medium such as a brochure, I will be able to produce a large quantity of my product at a low cost to where I can reach out to an even larger audience than the one I have intended. Having the ability to produce a brochure that is professionally produced is important to this project because making a brochure that catches my eye is not going to work. Rather, I need to think of what will catch the eye of the audience. If this brochure came in my mail, I would read it and consider the content within it because if I were to have different views on the topic, the basic arguments given to get people thinking about funding in schools given on this medium would get the information in my head about what more is there to the issue. A reason why it wouldn’t be a practical choice is because with mail, people usually look for the most important pieces which include checks, personal notes, bills, and more. That is why making a brochure that actually gets to the audience is a tough task.
