Major Writing Assignment 1: Language Communities
Your
first writing assignment is a critical assessment of something you're already
an expert in: a community you're part of. Write a script aimed at explaining a
unique or significant term from that community to an outsider (i.e. me).
This
assignment introduces you to two important concepts of this class. First, a
consideration of how audiences function to a rhetorician--your language is
intimately linked to the norms and standards of the community you're addressing.
The second is that you'll be working with a nonstandard media form. You'll
write and turn in a text, certainly, but you'll also record it and send me a
copy of the recording. This gives you the experience of working with tools like
Audacity or the CAI lab, but it also lets you start thinking about the
distinctions between the written word and the spoken word.
First Draft due January 2nd at 7:00 PM
Final Submission due one week after your conference
