Although our words each described a community that was special to us, there was commonalities among our choices. Maddie and I both wrote about how our words described our families and culture. Maddie's word came from her Italian grandfather, while mine is a common drink in Albania. The origin of our words were specific to a certain region in Europe. We also both went the route of choosing a word that exemplified food or drink. It showed how much food can be a staple piece in community, including whatever they value.
Anna and I went a different route on this assignment. While my word had meaning to me from the very beginning of my lifetime, Anna wasn't introduced to her phrase until high school. St. Joseph's Academy valued a value driven women leader who made a difference in the "real world". This word stuck out to Anna because even though high school is over, and we are approaching the middle of our second semester of freshman year in college, she still continues to see the value in her phrase throughout her life. We did however choose something that meant much more than the word itself. It was more about the values and aftermath of the word, then simply the actual meaning.
Overall, the deciding factor was our communities, and the way we interpreted this assignment. While Maddie and I valued our relationship with our culture, Anna valued her individual. Anna spoke of a community that I would not have been exposed to had it not been for listening to her Soundcloud, and Maddie showed her commitment to her family through her use of her word and stories behind it. Our commonalities were rare. Our differences defined our values and our beliefs.
