social media reliance

The topic that I want to choose for the rhetoric project for this semester is dependence on social media and electronics. The rise of technology brought so much convenience in our lives, we can have access to different information faster than ever. However, rather than spending time educating ourselves. A lot of people becomes addicted to social media. Personally, I feel that back then when I was a kid, we didn't have any electronics, so I enjoyed hanging out with my friends and we will always play together. However, since I became a teaching assistant for preschool kids, I begin to realize that nowadays children actually spend a lot of time on playing games on electronics. Children are not the only ones affected by And even me, personally, I feel that as an adult I also spend a lot of time on social media. People weren't really texting anyone but just keeps swiping the updates on Instagram and Twitter. Teens are spending more than one-third of their days using media such as online video or music — nearly nine hours on average, according to a new study from the family technology education non-profit group, Common Sense Media. (Washington Post), And this is not an effective way of spending quality time.

Therefore for the semester, I call to action to self-restrict cell phone use for adults, teens, and children. A great responsibility would be for schools to educate kids about correct cell phone use. For children, I think it's important to let them have access to electronics at later age. This is critical in building the social skills for children. Parents should self-guard kids from obtaining electronics at a too young age. Video games addiction at a young age can be especially dangerous. I remember when I was in middle school and high school, the websites for social media pages like Instagram, Twitter and Facebook's are blocked. I think this is an important action and the schools should enforce it. Moreover, middle and elementary schools should implement programs educating kids why are the websites blocked. Because back then, I thought that the school is just trying to keep us away from bad influences, as kids, they would tend to rebel against not knowing why were they restricted, but in reality, the action is helping children to live in the moment and be respectful of the people that are around. Life is about living in the moment, I call for action that people of all ages to put down their electronics and just enjoy a day without screens.

  1. I'd like you to narrow your focus to appealing either to parents or to school administrators; it'll be difficult to make a case that appeals to both. You've already acknowledged the difficulty in creating a rule that doesn't just give the action a rebellious aura, and that's good. As a final note, I'd remind you that Socrates, in Phaedrus, warns against the dangers the new technology of "literacy" poses to the morals and well-being of the youth--what makes social media so bad?
