As we move through the twenty-first
century it has been increasingly apparent the toll that humans are taking on
environment. Global warming is here, and
I feel it is our responsibility, as ones who caused this distress in our
environment, to resolve this issue to make this place a better one for our
future children and grandchildren. There
is nothing more depressing than to think that my future children may never know
what it is like to see a glacier or polar bear in person. For this reason, I believe that a major
change needs to be made in order to make sure this does not occur. If the United States does not make hard decisions
now, it may create a situation that the world will regret.
Because the
United States are seen as the leaders in creating cultural change throughout
the world, I believe it is on us to change the status quo. I believe that a solution to this extremely complicated
and divisive issue is to take power away from the oil industry in the United
States economy and culture. In my opinion, the most effective way to do this is
to focus on the automobile industry. Specifically,
one way to do this is to make it national law that only hybrid and electric
cars are allowed to be driven on the roads.
I believe
that this action is justified because one of the largest contributors to pollution
in the United States is emissions from gas.
Although making a law like this would be nearly impossible considering
the hold oil has in politics and its impact on the economy, I believe it is completely
necessary. We only have one planet to
live on for us and our future children, so the responsibility falls on us to
make it a habitable one. At the current
rate of pollution, the worlds ecosystem can face total degradation. Also, it is
important to note the United States influence on other nations across the
world. Many view the United States as
the spearhead to reform on various issues.
If solely the United States changed its policy against automobiles that
use gasoline, it probably would not save the worlds ozone layer. That being said, because of the weight that
the United States has in world politics, I believe many more countries would be
willing to follow in the United States footsteps. This would allow the Earth to have a much
more bright and ecofriendly future.
This is a very big topic, and you might not be able to take on the entirety of the issue within the parameters of the Rhetoric Project. My biggest recommendation is to find an organization or agency that's pushing in a similar direction, rather than having to engineer your own method of revising the entirety of the fleet. Much more moderate options (e.g. Cash for Clunkers) in this line have been squashed by blowback, so you'll really have to push the extraordinary urgency of the situation and the significant impact of your solution.
