My paper is gonna be on how leaders of the medical field, such as board members of hospitals and government officials responsible for health-care agenda, need to stop treating it like a business and focus more on helping people. A major example that I am going to talk about is the growing fear of antibiotics becoming less effective in treating infection because of the resistance that bacteria is building up to said medications. They say that in seven years all of our antibiotics wont work at fighting infection, and we would be back to the stone age in terms of infections. This is a very scary reality that we could face in our lifetime, but nothing is being done to combat this. Why? Because the drug companies that are producing these drugs are focusing on producing medications that make them the most money. Think about it: when one has an infection they take the antibiotic for a week maybe two weeks tops and then they are done. This requires only one initial purchase, and thus does not make as much money as per say infusion drugs. I have inflammatory bowel disease and require infusions every eight weeks. These infusions cost a pretty penny and I require them for the rest of my life so these drug companies would rather produce drugs like the one I need rather than a cheap antibiotic that might be used for a couple days. When in the grand scheme of things antibiotics are way more important because of the commonality of them in our society. This is just one of many examples that shows how money completely runs the medical field, and is hurting our societies overall health.
Overall the action I am calling for is to make all medical expenses government funded so that the medical field is not run by greedy people who would rather fill their pockets than help people. This way more people will be helped and thus making our country healthier as a whole.
For the other part of this assignment, I am going to argue against this topic by explaining the economics standpoint because if we were to have all types of healthcare government funded then our national debt would be in a worse state than it is presently in. Also, medical bills and hospitals being complex businesses help the american GOP as well.
This is a big topic, and I'll caution you that your aim might be too broad to take on directly within the parameters of our assignment. While researching, look for what movements currently exist and what their goals are. I'd rather you be able to point to a certain plan or group rather than having to develop a plan to nationalize the entire healthcare industry on your own. Particularly with your point on antibiotic use, that seems like something that might bring an interesting angle on the argument.
