MWA #2 Topic

The topic I have chosen for my Major Writing Assignment #2 is advocating for more funding for women’s health care. This is a great issue in our country because it faces half of our population. Congress is only twenty percent female, not giving women’s issues fair representation, which hurt the chances of any women’s healthcare issues being brought to the floor. One in two people will contract a sexually transmitted infection before their mid-twenties. Clearly sexual health is an issue in our country. By providing more and easier access to health clinics for women we could see less STIs spreading because with more clinics there would be more access to testing sites. Women could receive cheap to free STI testing and also receive treatment. With more testing, we would have more awareness and then people would know they were infected before transmitting it to their partner. This is only one way more women’s health care could positively effect our society.
I am calling for more funding for women’s health care. An example of this would be for more health clinics to be built around the country to help prevent and keep women healthy. I believe this is incredibly important and vital for the well-being of a country. We need to tackle health issues head on and be proactive. By offering more preemptive care we can save money in the long run because we would not have to pay for surgeries later.
I am calling for this action because I believe that health care is a human right. We as United States citizens are entitled to the life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. How can we pursue happiness when we are unhealthy? Everyone should have the right to affordable health care. By creating an easier way for women to receive care we can be saving lives. Many women live their life without receiving proper care or testing. Some women do not receive mammograms because they are worried they could not afford the screening. No woman should ever have to choose her health or money. This is why we need cheaper health care options. I am also calling for more health clinics around the country. So many clinics are based in urban areas that people from rural areas do not have access to their services. We need to place clinics also in rural areas to help care for those who do not have the ability to travel to bigger cities.
Overall, I am seeking to spread the importance of health care and to persuade our country to invest more funds in this cause.

  1. You've got a good sense of the exigency of the situation and a valid tactic. But you'll need to show where you see this money coming from. Municipal, state, federal, or private sources? You mention Congress being only 20% women, so I take it that's your actor of choice, but is your strategy, then, to elect more women, or to put pressure on the other 80%? I'd also encourage you, while researching, to look at the problem from both a national and local perspective--even if you want to keep the national perspective, seeing what local women's health centers need might be good information.
