Do not Trust the Internet!-Jimmy Helfrich

In Minor’s piece he is explaining the accessibility of the internet in the sense that anyone can post any sort of information that they want to on it. Therefore, anything that is posted on the internet requires further investigation to really get a feel for if it is accurate. Minor was able to completely falsify episode summaries to the point where big-name companies even believed his stories. In his piece he was specifically targeting unverified websites, and their potential to falsify information. To make sure that these websites are strengthened against such failures resides in the actual viewers themselves. Overall, He is saying that it is there responsibility to background check a source with other sources. Next, in Lee’s piece he is criticizing the internet users themselves and the ability of our internet-based society to believe anything they see on the internet. He uses specific examples of people that were innocent but claimed to be guilty on the internet, and how it affected these people’s lives. Thus, he is warning people to not believe anything that is seen online because it could have drastic consequences for many people. Lastly, in Cattachio’s piece he faces the major issue of people taking news from social media as if they were valid forms of news. This is a huge problem today because anyone can post anything they want to on social media, and to regard this as if it came from a reputable news source is foolishness at its best. He explains that this is all too prevalent of an issue because people think it is reliable due to features these networks have. For example, twitter has the “top tweets” function, and a lot of the time it is about news stories. People need to stop trusting posts such as these on big social media websites and obtain news from more reliable sources.
