Rhinoceros Reaction

I went to this play with very few expectations, because I had no background information and I have only ever seen musicals. I Had mixed emotions when I left. I was particularly confused by a couple of the scenes, and wondered what the point was. But I think that the main message or goal that the playwright was aiming for was the theme of conformity. For better or for worse, there was a "mass movement" where everyone began transforming into rhinoceroses. It was very obvious that the characters were all struggling with some inner conflicts, especially the last character that was human.
I learned after watching the play that the playwright was writing this during a time when fascism was a huge problem in 1959. Knowing this made much more sense, and confirmed my thoughts on the theme of conformity. Mass movements are a problem in any time period, and in any place in the world, so this play can be interpreted on a much larger scale than I imagined at first.
Overall, the production felt like it tried too hard for my liking. The theme of conformity was almost blinding and at some parts in the play I felt like it wasn't necessary. I think the intention of the play is pure, it just wasn't for me.
