How I am Who I Am -> Ryan Gaines

The origins of my family are fascinating. My great grandfather came to the United States from Germany and started a bakery in my home town. With the big hands to make doughnuts and that little hint of an accent, my grandfather is a great reminder of heritage. My grandmother on my mom’s side has a family that came from Ireland. This heritage is reflected directly in my name with my middle name being Patrick. My dad’s side has much more of a story and a sense that there is more to be found out. We know that my grandfather’s family on my dad’s side came from Wales, and has a distant link in our family history to our first President, George Washington. My grandmother’s side is much different. Her mother was adopted from India, so there is not a lot that we know about her family. My family history is very diverse to where I am able to connect to and appreciate many different cultures. Also, my brother and I have recently become devote Christians through a group on SLU’s campus called Chi Alpha. This has been the best decision that we ever made, and that I have ever made because even though I went from a Catholic to a devote Christian, the difference is that with Christianity I am able to celebrate the Lord with so much more love and joy than I was able to with Catholicism. I am who I am due to my heritage, my past, and what I have become due to my relationship with Christ. I am proud of who I am and I can’t wait to learn more about myself as well as others.
