Thug Nation: Venezuela's broken Revolution
Purpose: The purpose of this documentary by Financial Times is to put a larger emphasis on showing how when Hugo Chavez was still alive, Venezuela claimed to be "a beacon of Socialist revolution." Since his death, the country has taken a massive decline in specifically economy. Venezuela sits on a huge oil reserve which was the main source for money in the late 1900's. The economy has crashed over the passed 18 years, inflation is at levels unheard of, and crime rates are at high rates. Gang leaders and gangs themselves are in contact with the authorities as they are aware of what they do. According to the gangs, they carry out crimes for the government. All this makes many unable to find food. The main purpose of the video is to explain to the rest of the world that the difference in leadership has turned a country from having hope and promise, to complete disorder and chaos.
Audience: The audience of this video is the rest of the world to not only show what a government that needs help will do to a country. It also shows first-hand the potential that Venezuelans have to be successful, they just need the right leadership and control that is forceful. It is meant to take risks in a country that is not safe in order to open the eyes of those like us so that we appreciate our situation more as well as focus our attention on those in need.
Context: The context of this video is how under Chavez, the government and people of Venezuela were doing much better economically. The crime rates were also much less as there was a stronger and more forceful police and military presence to stop crimes and gangs. With Chavez gone, Venezuela has made a complete 180 degree turn in terms of crime, government stability, and economic stability. The country is in complete chaos in every aspect and the way that it can be changed is for those who are enjoying the freedom to do as they please without a stable and forceful system for punishment to change for the good. This will solve the problems of crimes as well as inflation because it will settle the population down as people will start to think about working again.
Text: The text that is shown throughout is mostly subtitles due to the fact that the language being spoken is not english in some videos, but one example of data being shown was very clever in that they displayed it on the side of a run-down apartment building. It showed the increase in food shortage in Venezuela since 2012. Chavez died in 2013, and the rate of food shortage shot up drastically.
